Il convegno Oceans, Art and Markets. Fifty Years of International Research and Methodologies, promosso dal Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte e dall’Edith O’ Donnell Institute for Art History di Dallas, insieme alla storica dell’arte Sabina de Cavi dell’Università di Córdoba in Spagna, è una ricognizione sullo stato degli studi e sui differenti approcci di ricerca al tema della circolazione via mare di mercanti, artisti e opere d’arte nell’Europa moderna.

Il convegno – che si terrà giovedì 30 maggio presso la Capraia-Centro per la Storia dell’Arte e dell’Architettura delle Città Portuali nel Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte e poi nel pomeriggio presso la Società napoletana di storia patria, venerdì 31 maggio al Pio Monte della Misericordia e all’Archivio storico del Banco di Napoli e sabato 1 giugno 2019 alla Certosa di San Martino – costituisce il terzo meeting accademico del progetto Merchants and Artists: Provision and Circulation of Artistic Materials and Works of Art between Genoa and Lisbon (1450-1600), diretto da Sabina de Cavi con la collaborazione di un team di studiosi internazionali, e co-sponsorizzato dal Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación spagnolo con il Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad de España e il Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) dell’UE (PROYECTO I + D 2016, codice n. HAR2016-80173-P).

Il convegno pone a confronto storici e storici dell’arte, storici della navigazione e dell’economia, e si articola in lectures presso La Capraia e visite studio alle più importanti biblioteche e archivi della città, quali l’Archivio Storico del Banco di Napoli, la sezione Manoscritti e Rari della Biblioteca Nazionale, la Società Napoletana di Storia Patria e la sezione “Immagini e Memorie” della Certosa e Museo di San Martino. In questi luoghi, il gruppo di ricercatori internazionali, con la guida di studiosi e docenti napoletani, potrà consultare documenti d’epoca riguardanti la storia del porto di Napoli e della circolazione delle merci artistiche via mare.

Ad aprire il convegno, giovedì 30 maggio alle ore 9.00 presso La Capraia, i saluti istituzionali di Sarah Kozlowski, docente all’Edith O’ Donnell Institute e Direttrice del Centro di studi La Capraia, quelli di Sylvain Bellenger, Direttore del Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, e di Pietro Spirito, Presidente per l’Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centrale, questi ultimi due anche membri dell’Advisory Group del Centro. A seguire, la lectio magistralis del Prof. Hans Van Miegroet, dalla prestigiosa università americana Duke University, che presenterà i risultati e le metodologie di ricerca del suo approccio innovativo allo studio del mercato dell’arte nell’Europa moderna.

Nell’ambito del programma, i convegnisti visiteranno anche la mostra “Caravaggio Napoli” in entrambe le sedi del Museo di Capodimonte e del Pio Monte della Misericordia. La vicenda del pittore e delle sue tele, in viaggio tra Malta, la Sicilia, Napoli e Genova, incarna perfettamente quella circolazione via mare di artisti e oggetti d’arte che il convegno si pone di indagare.
